Materials
Materials science is a branch of science in its own right, studying the properties of materials, understanding these and relating them to the microstructure, predicting how materials will behave in a huge range of situations and environments, and designing new materials for novel applications. In this topic we shall just touch on the basic bulk properties and behaviour of solids.

Notes
In lessons we shall discuss any questions and go through examples mainly. For each lesson, you must either
- hand in a reading memo on paper at the beginning of the lesson, or
- complete an online reading memo via the MIT interface by 9.30 p.m. the evening before the lesson.
- Density | reading memo
- Hooke's law | reading memo
- Young modulus | reading memo
- Beyond proportion | reading memo |
